TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELVES
We both went to the University of Cincinnati and stayed in the city after graduating. I’m getting ready to graduate from Kettering College with my Occupational Therapy Doctorate degree. I plan on working with adults in acute care after I pass my board exam! Mike is currently working as a sales engineer in New Jersey. Prior to that, he was working in Northern Italy for a year. He traveled to many different European countries while he was there, and I was able to visit 3 times! The most memorable trip for me was when we went hiking along the coast in Cinque Terre, I would love to go back there someday! We have two fur babies – a terrier/chihuahua mix named Tito and a cat named Diablo. Mike grew up sailing on Lake Erie and he’s been teaching me how to sail for the past few years. We plan to start sailing a lot again when I move to NJ. We’re excited to live so close to NYC and also decently close to a lot of good hiking spots in NY and PA.
HOW DID YOU TWO MEET AND WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO ABOUT BEING MARRIED?
From Mike: The first time I knew Emily and I were for the long haul was our first official date. We met while out with separate friends at Murphy’s Pub and have differing stories on who made the first move (but it was me). After that we continued talking the next day with my smooth intro text about how good Chicago Gyro is and a few days later, after texting non-stop, I finally invited her over to my place. She agreed to come over and watch a movie. So I feverishly cleaned my built in 1879 (true date!) duplex which hadn’t been updated since 1880 (maybe true?) to sit and wait….and wait…and finally I accepted she wasn’t coming (TO THIS DAY she claims she thought I was joking). Fortunately for her, I asked her out to dinner at Teak Thai Restaurant by my house a few days later, and she agreed again. WEARY AS TO IF SHE WOULD SHOW I got dressed and waited. She texted and said she was there, so I came out to greet her in her minivan and noticed we were wearing essentially the same outfit; blue shorts, white shirt. Though she used to love those shorts, she now berates me when I wear them. The holes and stains add character! After we got over wearing the same outfit we walked up to Teak. Our waiter sat us down and took our drink orders, we started talking and talking and talking and then an older Thai woman (who has come to be known as the ghost) came to our table, started talking to us, and then begins singing a love song in Thai. Em and I not knowing WHAT to do, clapped, said how great it was (which it was!) and then had no idea what had happened because we never saw her again! Not during the meal, after, or while walking out! After dinner we walked to the overlook of Cincinnati which was by my house and took in the views. Thinking the next day about our date, how much fun we had, and the paranormal experience, all I could think about was when I could see her again. And now luckily I get to see her every day for the rest of my life. From Murphy’s, to Teak, to Kinsey Flats, to Europe, now to New Jersey, I couldn’t be luckier to have Emily literally spilled into my life unexpectedly that Friday night at Murphy’s happy hour.
From Emily: Â I’m looking forward to the little things, like cooking dinner together and binge watching Netflix. We lived in different countries for a year and now we’re living in different states, so I’m just excited to be in the same place finally! I’m also looking forward to traveling and exploring the areas around our new home. We’ll be living very close to NYC so it will be fun to take day trips into the city!
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE OR MEMORABLE PART OF THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION?
My favorite part of the engagement session was how much we genuinely laughed and smiled. We both like to have fun and be goofy and weird, and I think our pictures will show that. I’m glad we didn’t try to do too many serious face pictures!
WERE YOU SURPRISED BY ANYTHING DURING THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION?
I think I was surprised by how quickly we became comfortable in front of the camera.
HOW DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR OUTFITS FOR THE SESSION?
To be honest, our outfits were chosen pretty last minute! We chose neutral colors that complimented one another and wouldn’t be too distracting in pictures. Even though it was technically Spring, it was still chilly outside, so we wore outfits that reflected that (we didn’t realize how warm the greenhouse would be!). I wanted to make sure I felt comfortable in my outfit and would be able to move in a variety of poses.
